I’m currently a senior director and digital content guru at KPIX TV in San Francisco. My passion is in visual storytelling through photographs and video. But, you can’t tell important stories without knowing how to showcase them on the right platforms and in the right technical parameters… So, I guess you can say I’m artist meets “geek.” I enjoy stylizing projects to fit brand, mood, and message using sound design, post-production motion graphics, and I have a keen eye for detail.
It all started at the University of Montana where I majored in R/TV and minored in Advertising. With over 15 years as a director, managing production teams in the studio and in the field, I know how to maximize resources and deliver projects with professionalism and precision.

I’m currently the Director and Chief Editor of Editorial and Multimedia at Gap Inc. I’m told that means I’m the “Chief Storyteller” within Gap Inc and help the company and its 5 brands leverage the power of video in internal and external communications. This is a dream opportunity considering I’ve been obsessed in recent years with broadcast to internet video conversion. And, there are a million great stories to tell in a company that “gets it” when it comes to visual communications.
<a
<a
My interest in “words” started as a student writing for the Stanford Daily. I studied documentary film at Oxford and worked in TV news for the better part of my 20s and 30s. Because I have a lot of “inner nerd” – I covered technology, Silicon Valley business trends, and consumer issues for most of that time. But, don’t let that fool you. I don’t take myself too seriously and think that’s what helps me keep videos emotional, compelling, and down-to-earth.
<a
<a
<a
I talk a lot. As you can see I host and emcee events for:

We asked Ben How He Did It:

“I wrote the rap first, then made the beats and loops and recorded my voice on Garage Band. I wasn’t planning on making a video, originally it was just going to be a song. Then about a year after I made it, I decided it would probably make a good video because it’s so literal. I had to get friends to help out and I would maybe shoot a couple scenes every other month or so. I shot it with my camera (canon xl2), edited on final cut pro. The only real challenges was asking businesses if we could shoot in their stores. As for the finished product, I only had plans to send it to friends and family. I didn’t have any plans to enter it in any competitions, and I didn’t have any aspirations of making it a viral video. But, it got quite a few hits the first month.”

A compelling story engages the audience, evokes emotion, inspires a call-to-action, and remains memorable. You need powerful words, strong images, and an element that makes the “connection.” Choosing the right production methods for the various platforms will maximize production quality and ability to share content with desired audiences.
